The Republic of Haiti was created in by slaves who revolted against France. Modern Haitians are descended from generations of intermarriage between a variety of West African nations, with some influence from the French and the Taino Indians. Haitian cultural life is a rich mix of these influences, and the Voudou religion has become an effective synthesis of Christianity and West African beliefs. Gede Nibo is the Voudou spirit of the dead and the guardian of the cemetery. He is the only spirit dressed in Western attire and is the advocate of the poor to the politicians or the people in power. Ghede Nibo is a loa who is leader of the spirits of the dead in Haitian Vodou. Formerly human, Ghede Nibo was a handsome young man who was killed violently. After death, he was adopted as a loa by Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte. He is envisioned as an effeminate, nasal dandy. Nibo wears a black riding coat or drag. When he inhabits humans they are inspired to lascivious sexuality of all kinds. Brav Ghede Nibo is a rada spirit,  considered a great healer.
