Since the introduction of radio in Latin America in the s—and, later, of television in the s—mass culture has become a vital part of Latin American identity, and as such has also become an important part of Latin American narratives. The novel examines the Chilean emulation of American consumerism and pop culture , in the context of a growing opposition to the dictatorial rule of Augusto Pinochet in Chile.
