Science Alert. International Journal of Poultry Science. Year: Volume: 9 Issue: 5 Page No. Amao , I. Oladunjoye , V. Togun , K. Olubajo and O. Abstract: Two hundred and fifty Isa-Brown point of lay chicken of 30 weeks of age were used to determine the effect of substituting westwood Cirina forda larva meal WWLM for fish meal which is the most expensive feed ingredient in layer diet on laying performance of chicken. Data collected were feed intake, weight change, egg production, feed efficiency and egg quality characteristics Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance.

Proximate analysis showed that WWLM contained higher crude protein , crude fibre, ether extract, dry matter and ash than fish meal. Egg shell thickness, yolk colour and Haugh unit were not significantly different among treatments.

This study was aimed at generating baseline information for sustainable genetic improvement of Cirana forda larvae for entomophagy, through the use of gamma irradiation. Eggs of C. These results suggest promising potentials of the use of gamma irradiation in sustainably improving the productivity of C. According to Ande , the larvae of C. However, because the larvae are pests of an equally economically important tree species, Vitellaria paradoxa , the insect species development and production are often interrupted by the natives, especially, due to the prolonged larval stage whose gregarious feeding normally coincides with the reproductive season of the host plant. Therefore, there is a need to strike a balance between sustainable production of both C. This may be achieved by shortening the duration of the larval stage, such that the species is able to complete its development within a short period, particularly outside the reproductive season of its host plant.

The phospholipid, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, as well as, the fatty acid profile of the caterpillar of Cirina forda , a pallid emperor moth, known for its popularity as a food insect in Nigeria, were elucidated and compared with other popular sources of lipids. It proved to be a rich source of unsaturates, surpassing other popular lipid sources as a source of polyunsaturates. It is rich in fatty acids such as Linolenic acid The possible nutritional implications of the consumption of C.
